What is a cult figure?

A leader of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices.

Head of an unorthodox activity who often lives outside of conventional society.

Elvis is a cult figure for his memory is followed with exaggerated zeal. I suppose anyone who is placed upon a pedestal whether dead or alive and has a large following of devotees can be considered a cult figure. Though I do not place God or Christ in this category.
