Why is alternating current used by many countries?

Alternating current is used in many countries because of the fact that it can carry more volts of power with fewer amps as well as the discovery of Transformers which only work because AC creates a flux that induces a current in the other wire and allow for more current to be carried in the wires and stepped down to go into houses.
