The simple solution is to never get into that situation. Easy said, right? Well, easy done. If this is a situation that you face periodically, reassess what you are doing, then don't do that any more. If you are engaging in behavior that takes you there, it will end badly for you or someone else.

Answer:The sad fact is that no matter how much elements of society want to and try to eliminate fighting from society, it is a part of human behavior. Think about it: the strongest instinct of any living thing is survival. Anything that threatens survival will elicit one of two responses: fight or flight. (in most living organisms)
This is key in animal behavior, it is even key in plant behavior (put an irritant in the way of a growing tree--say a fence wire--and see what happens). Fighting will never be eliminated as long as the elements that precipitate it exist.
That being said, there are two things you can do if confronted by confilict with an overpowering opponent or group of opponents: run, or stand and fight. If you run, you will be chased. You may or may not escape. If you do not escape, you will have to fight. Protect yourself as best you can. Remember, there are two rules in fighting (discard all that "no hitting below the belt rubbish"): defeat your enemy any way you can, and survive. If you are in a real street fight, those attacking you will not stand idly by as one by one each steps up to challenge you. If you stand up and show bravado or arrogance, you will only further enrage an already overpowering force. Reality is not a Bruce Lee movie.
