I got this off of a BBC America discussion Board, here you go

The pin to which you refer, represent a poppy flower, which were abundant on the battlefields of the First World War. The pin now symbolizes those who have fought or fallen in the Service of their Country in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts and is produced by the one of the largest Charities in the UK

The Poppy pin is offered to the general public in return for a donation, each year, between October and Remembrance Day, on November 11 by the Royal British Legion, a Charity which was set up after the First World War to aid and assist veterans of the Military Forces.

If you google Poppy Day, or Poppy Appeal.......all will be revealed.
