The Exxon Valdez was an oil tanker designed with a single-hull structure, which lacked the double-hull feature that provides additional protection against leaks. Measuring approximately 987 feet in length, it had a capacity of around 1.5 million barrels of crude oil. The vessel's design and construction were standard for its time, but the absence of a double hull made it particularly vulnerable to breaches. The spill occurred in 1989 when the tanker struck a reef in Prince William Sound, leading to one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.
