It comes from a French Word: né, meaning 'born'. In other Words, 'what name were you born with' or 'what was your maiden name' such as for Jada Pinkett Smith, it was Pinkett. This question isn't asked as much as it used to be, because nowadays, women change their name to be entertainers, some women keep their 'maiden' or family names after they get married and some women get married many times.
