Do the martians in War of the Worlds ever directly attempt to kill the narrator in the story if so is there a quote from the book that shows it?

They never actually singled him out for any special attention but there were a couple of incidences where he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

1. Swimming across the river the heat ray passed over him and turned the water into a boiling turmoil
2. When he was trapped in the basement with the precinct and the martians came looking for them. He was saved by an oddly shaped piece of wood that captured the martians attention for an examination.
3. When fleeing England on the paddle-wheel ferry three tripods came after them. They were saved by ThunderChild. The ferry was of course filled with people not just the narrator.
