Chief Justice John Marshall, a Federalist appointed by President John Adams shortly before President Jefferson took office, had a rocky relationship with President Jefferson. Although the two men were distant cousins, they reportedly hated each other.

Jefferson despised Marshall's ideology and opposed the Chief Justice's successful quest to strengthen the Judicial branch of government. Jefferson believed Marshall was manipulative, and that his legal opinions represented "twistifications" of the Constitution.
