On August 4, 1914, Britain declared war on Germany and Canada entered World War I. This was the normal procedure due to its status as a British Dominion. On August 5, 1914, the Canadian Governor General also declared war on Germany but did not activate the militia. Instead, a special Canadian Expeditionary Force was raised.
