Why would a millionaire donate money to charity?

Apart from those who are indifferent to the needs of others, there are several reasons people resist giving money to charities.

In some cases, they realise that some charities give little or none of the money to those actually in need, keeping much of the donated money for stipends, administrative expenses and commissions. In some cases, it is even unclear whether the charity even has a charitable purpose, or is simply a collection for the maintenance of a religious organisation. Even when money does reach those in need it can be misapplied, so that there is little in the way of long term improvement - people are more likely to give if they know that their donations really will help someone.

These are problems that charities have to address if they wish to encourage the generosity of those to whom they appeal for funds.
