Why did the colonist throw tea crates into the harbor during the tea act?

Colonists threw tea crates into Boston Harbor during the Tea Act of 1773 as a protest against what they viewed as unfair taxation and the monopoly granted to the British East India Company. They believed that the act violated their rights as Englishmen since they were being taxed without representation in Parliament.
