Can a bluebird hover

Yes, for short amounts of time. I have a bluebird nest in a birdhouse on my deck. Whenever I let my dog out, the male will dive at my dog to warn her, and when I let her in, the bird hovers for around 5 seconds about 10 feet from the door until I shut it.
