Why is the eagle considered sacred?

It was adopted as such by congress very early in our history. I think they chose it because it had been a Roman symbol and there was a great deal of identification with the Roman Republic and because it is a beautiful and majestic bird. The national bird of the United States of America is the Bald Eagle.
