What did the the brothers tell Jacob had happened to Joseph?

The brothers told Jacob that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal. They presented him with Joseph's coat, which they had dipped in goat's blood to make it appear as though he had died. This deception caused Jacob immense grief, leading him to believe that his beloved son was dead. In reality, they had sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt.
