John Humphrey Noyes was an American theologian and reformer best known for founding the Oneida Community in 1848, a utopian religious commune in New York. Noyes promoted complex marriage, a system where all members of the community were considered married to one another, and he advocated for communal living and shared property. His ideas on free love and communal child-rearing were controversial, leading to criticism and legal challenges. The Oneida Community ultimately transitioned into a successful business, producing silverware and other goods, before dissolving as a religious commune in the late 19th century.
