The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) and the Treaty of Zaragoza (1529) were agreements between Spain and Portugal to divide newly discovered lands. The Treaty of Tordesillas established a line of demarcation, granting Spain the Americas and Portugal territories in Africa and Asia. In contrast, the Treaty of Zaragoza defined the eastern boundary of the Spanish and Portuguese empires in the Pacific, resolving disputes over the Moluccas (Spice Islands). Both treaties aimed to prevent conflict between the two maritime powers during the Age of Exploration.
