Raising ceilings is something I've done a number of times. If you can't cut into the attic for some reason (like trusses), then you may have to actually raise the entire roof section. During remodels I have jacked up the roof and inserted either a short "pony wall" or 12" microlam on top of all of the walls to bridge the new gap. I have also lowered the floor to give extra height to first floor rooms.
