What is there to learn about whiskey?

Like with anything food and beverage, there is a whole culture around studying whisk(e)y. The flavor profiles attributed to the various parts of the production method: preparing the grains, making the MASH out of the grains, fermentation, distillation, filtering, and aging. Not to mention the environment that the whisk(e)y is produced in may add something as well.
