I recently replaced the unit on my 2002 Impala thanks to a fix suggested by another reader on this forum. Despite the dealer stating that the dash must be removed and the switch released from the back, a simple, fast solution is as follows.
Take a small, thin screwdriver and pull the triangular hazard knob off the unit from the front. Now take and slide a narrow, flat screwdriver along each side of the switch. This will release the tabs holding the unit and the unit will slide out. There is at least eight inches of cable that comes out so there is no danger of losing the harness behind the dash. Disconnect the harness, install the new harness and slide the unit back into the opening. The procedure took all of five minutes. Good Luck.
You are right on took 4.5 minutes. Thanks Rick
