When did Amelia Earharts plane go missing?

Amelia Earhart's plane went missing on July 2, 1937, during her attempt to circumnavigate the globe. She and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the aircraft or its occupants was ever found.
