In 1997 Larry Page and Sergey Brin decide that the BackRub search engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming, they go with google -- a play on the Word "googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The use of the term reflects their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.
However accidental Page and Anderson were in the use of the Word 'google' for their search engine, its origins predate the 1990s. The earliest known use of the Word 'google' is attributed to a young artist, who in 1979 created a family of aliens from Mars known as the 'google' They were published by filmmaker Kris Koster in the early 1980s.
