Why has society become too preoccupied with appearance?

Firstly, people get treated specially for their beauty, more money, more fame etc.

Secondly, that way people would be less likely to mock your appearance - prejudists they are.

Of course for each person their is a deeper explanation for doing this but these are most common reasons.
