The biggest lahar in recorded history occurred during the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991. This massive volcanic mudflow was triggered by heavy rainfall on volcanic ash deposits, resulting in flows that reached up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) in length and caused extensive damage to surrounding areas. The lahar buried villages, destroyed infrastructure, and resulted in significant displacement of communities. Its scale and impact highlight the destructive potential of lahars, especially in volcanic regions.
