In 1917, John Spargo published The Bitter Cry of the Children, detailing the working hardships both women and children experienced. Many women and children worked for poor pay in unsanitary conditions. The Progressive Era (c1900-1920) sought to remedy these social and economic dysfunctions caused by the industrial revolution and capitalism run amok.

Most muckrakers (those who bestirred concern about social and economic issues) did not agree with progressive era politics because the power lay in the hands of the same capitalists that threatened humanity.

John Spargo, not initially a muckraker, became one to create humane child labor laws. He wanted to breach the runaway capitalism and the industrial revolution dysfunctions.
