It depends upon the species but most feed on plants that are toxic as caterpillars. These toxins are retained throughout the life of the butterfly. Predators are warned of the butterfly's toxic nature because of its bright colors. Certain Painted Lady species also have eye spots on their wings. These throw predators off by making them think that their prey item is looking at them.
