An open system is one which allows the exchange of matter and energy between the system and its surroundings.

A forest (or any other kind of habitat) allows energy in (as sunlight) and energy out (ultimately as heat released by respiration).

It also allows matter in (living organisms, water, carbon dioxide etc) and out.

So all habitats are ultimately open systems.
