Because their signal is not transmitted from one handset ot another... it's relayed by a network of radio towers. The phone sends data to the nearest tower - and the tower relays the signal through the network to the tower closest to the recipient. Signals can also be relayed by satellites around the planet - to enable communication with people in other countries
