Hernán Cortés never actually went to the present-day United States; his expeditions were primarily focused on Mexico, where he led the conquest of the Aztec Empire. After his successful conquest, he returned to Spain several times to report to the Spanish crown and address issues related to his governance in the New World. His final return to Spain occurred in 1541, after which he remained there until his death in 1547.
