The developing embryo interrupts the menstrual cycle primarily by signaling the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone through the release of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone prevents the degeneration of the corpus luteum, which would normally lead to a drop in progesterone levels and the onset of menstruation. As a result, the uterine lining is maintained, allowing for implantation and growth of the embryo. Additionally, the hormonal changes help to suppress ovulation during early pregnancy.
