Can you divide an atom

Yes. Atoms can be divided into protons, neutrons and electrons. The atom gets its name from the Greek Word atomos which is usually translated as "indivisible", though thanks to the advent of quantum mechanics, we now know that the atom is indeed divisible, but cannot be cut into smaller pieces, since quarks and electrons are "point particles" (i.e. take up no space).
