How many area codes are there in the United States?

Florida currently has 17 telephone area codes:

1. 239 = Ft. Myers
2. 305 = Miami
3. 786 = overlay of 305
4. 352 = Gainesville, Ocala
5. 386 = Daytona Beach, Lake City
6. 321 = Melbourne, "Space Coast" (321 only) andoverlay of 407
7. 407 = Orlando
8. 561 = Boca Raton, West Palm Beach
9. 727 = St. Petersburg
10. 772 = Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie
11. 813 = Tampa
12. 850 = Tallahassee, Pensacola, panhandle
13. 863 = Lakeland
14. 904 = Jacksonville
15. 941 = Sarasota
16. 954 = Ft. Lauderdale
17. 754 = overlay of 954

In the original area code assignments in 1947, all of Florida was area code 305. It has split and split and split again, to the 17 area codes now in use. Area code 321 is unique, because it is the only area code for one area (the "Space Coast," including Cape Canaveral), but also an overlay area code for an adjacent area (including Orlando).
