Later it would be revealed that Sally Ride was a lesbian with the reveal of her lesbian & business partner Tam O'Shaughnessy. The two met as children at age 12, when they both played tennis. They were longtime friends and maintained contact despite the fact their paths went in different directions. They ultimately began maintained a lesbian relationship in 1985, 2 years prior to her official divorce from Steven Hawley.

Upon Sally Ride's death on July 23rd, 2012. Ms. Ride and Ms. O'Shaughnessy had been in a relationship for 27 years. And Ms. O'Shaughnessy was present when Ms. Ride passed.
