How can i clean gummy residue off over-stove cabinets?

This happens at my parent's house, due to the way their stove vent is designed. When I go visit, I just spray it with warm water that has a few drops of dish soap, then I just scrub the mess out of it with a scrub brush. It mainly just takes some elbow grease, but it comes clean.
