There is no salary as such because barristers are self employed. They receive their payments (eventually) from solicitors or the courts gross. From the payment they received 15/17.5 % will be re-paid to the Customs as VAT. Then a further 20/40 % will be paid of the remainder to the INland Revenue. What is the most remarkable scam about being a cirminal barrister in self-employment is that about £500 per month plus about 10 - 15 % of gross income goes directlt to the Barristers' Chambers. Most of this goes in salaries to the utterly anachronistic Barristers' clerks who in many cases are earning 6 figure salaries (in criminal chambers this is tax-payer's money) for passing work from the solicitor to the barrister. The government has long spot the complete anachronism of the Barrister's clerk and has implemented changes which will almost certainly lead to the end of the criminal bar as we know it. So-called "BVT" will lead to 3 in 4 or possible 4 in 5 criminal legal aid firms failing to gain contracts to provide legal aid criminal work. The result in 5 to 7 years is that all but the most senior "Queen's Counsel" criminal barristers will be probably working for a salary "in-house" at big solictors' firms. The salary is dependent on ability, reputation and general calibre but would be around £35,000 for a junior under 10 years call up to £60,000 - £100,000 for a senior barrister.
