Test for which chemicals are present (qualitative analysis)(for a project, you probably won't have any idea how or ability to perform most of the needed ones; if you do, why are you asking this here?).
Then find out how much of each is present (quantitative analysis)(you may not have the equipment or knowledge to do some of these tests either, but probably enough to get decent results).
Then, find out what are considered good, acceptable and bad levels for each chemical, and compare the values from each one.
