What was the earth like after the meteor hit and killed all dinosaurs?

Ferns quickly grew where all the other plants had died; this is called a fern spike. The climate was probably somewhat cooler for hundreds of years because of remnants of dust from the asteroid impact still floating in the atmosphere. Other than that, the climate was probably similar to before the impact. The surviving animals included most land invertebrates that existed before, as well as birds, mammals, lizards, snakes, amphibians, and crocodilians, and in the ocean, most fish, sharks, and invertebrates survived. It took millions of years for mammals to fill the niches left open by the dinosaurs and other reptiles.
