Why is the check engine light on in 1999 VW Beetle?

I recently had the oil changed but it didnt turn on after 2 weeks with that the oil. Then the battery died or rather discharged, so we took it to get charged and the car felt different after driving it. Then the check engine light when on after my 2nd use of it with the new charged battery. So did the computer get disprogrammed or something?
