* use the sander in a dry environment. * If using outdoors, connect the sander to the power supply via a supply with earth leakage detection/residual current detection and cutoff. * Check the sander and all electrical cables and connections are in good condition. * wear eye protection * wear hearing protection * wear a dust mask. If sanding particularly hazardous materials such as lead paint, fibre cement etc., wear a ventilator rated for the hazard. * check that sandpaper/abrasive papers attached to the sander are in good condition and not torn * do not wear jewellery.

* do not wear clothing with loose or trailing parts that could be caught in the sander

* tie back long hair and tuck under a cap if the ponytail is long enough to reach past your ear. * keep fingers clear of the sanding surface. * for belt sanders be aware of the direction of the belt and the direction the sander will want to move. Keep fingers clear of theis direction. * Keep the work area free of items that may be caught in or flung about by the sander. * Clean up dust frequently. * Set up the work area to minimise other distractions and hazards.
