Examples of metaphor

A metaphor is a literary tool where a comparison is made that is not literally possible and generally has some kind of symbolic meaning. Unlike a simile, a metaphor does not use the Words "like" or "as." The following are examples of metaphors:

1. Life is a roller coaster.

This is a metaphor because life is not literally a roller coaster, but the comparison is made in a symbolic sense.

2. The world is a stage.

This famous Shakespeare quote is an example of a metaphor. The world is not literally a stage, but it has the symbolic qualities of a stage.
