Why did wolves almost go extinct in lower 48 stastes?

Wolves have not disappeared yet. Many species have been on the endangered list, but the timber wolf has come back enough that Michigan is considering opening a limited, specially licensed hunt to help manage the population in the Upper Peninsula.
