The name "Satan" actually means "accuser" in The Bible. In the book of Job, Satan was one of God's servants, attending God in the heavenly court. In his role as Accuser or Prosecutor, was to serve God by exposing hypocrisy and unbelief.

Another name is Lucifer, meaning Light Bearer. It can also be translated as Day Star or Morning Star. It came to refer to the devil from its use in Isaiah 14-20, which actually speaks of the king of Babylon, not a supernatural enemy of God.
