Why was Freon banned in the US?

Freon wasn't banned - Freon is a name trademarked by DuPont for a line of CFC and HFC refrigerants they manufactured.

What was banned were CFC refrigerants (such as R12). They were banned from further production due to the negative environmental effects they have.
