That depends which "wild mangosteen" you mean, as this can be Garcinia indica or perhaps Sandoricum koetjape.

There are at least fifty and perhaps 200 species in the genus Garcinia, of which any can be wild and most can be called "mangosteen".

The Garcinia indica is also known as aamsol, aamsul, bindin, biran, bhirand, bhrinda, brinda, bin'na, kokum (alternate spellings kokam and cocum), katambi, looikya, sour Apple, panarpuli, ratamba.

On the other hand there is another fruit, the santol, that isn't a member of the mangosteen genus at all, but which is sometimes called "wild mangosteen" or "false mangosteen". Other names for the santol include

  • Filipino: santol
  • Indonesian: kecapi, ketuat, sentul
  • Malay: kecapi, kelampu, ranggu
  • Thai : krathon or sathon; also ma tong or ma tuen
  • French: faux mangoustanier, santol
  • Singhalese: donka

The botanical name of the santol is Sandoricum koetjape.
