Why does a liquid have a definite volume but gas does not?

Gas will always keep expanding until it fills the entire shape and volume of whatever container you put it in.

Liquid won't do that. It just lays there in the bottom. It takes the shape of the

container, but keeps the same volume it had when you poured it in there.
