Taking nursing classes is very challenging for most RN students - many feel the pain of burnout after the second semester and often quit. Becoming an RN is a very rewarding career though, also offering attractive salaries and the benefit of a recession-proof job. By following a few simple rules, RN students will successfully be able to avoid burnout and reach graduation with the determination needed to enter the nursing profession.
1. Balance ScheduleMany nursing students are over-committed, often involved in extra-curricular activities. During nursing classes, especially during the second year, it is important for students to take a break from these activities. Also it is best to find quiet places to study away from the distractions of home, such as a library, coffee shop or a park. Students should rearrange their schedule if need be to allow plenty of study time and ample time to sleep also, as sleep is crucial.
2. Avoid CrammingNearly every student has at least once been guilty of cramming for a test. This practice is not a good habit to form in nursing school. Much of the information provided is necessary to learn and is often fairly easy to retain since much of it can be applied to common sense. Studying ahead of time and reading at a pace which allows information absorption is the best practice.
3. Designate BreaksDeveloping a schedule of breaks during studying is very important. Every hour students should plan a small break and then an ultimate reward break at the end of the study session. The end break should include something desirable, such as a small treat, a hot bath or watching a favorite T.V show. By developing a routine with a reward, students will positively associate studying with the reward and it will be much more bearable.
4. Prepare For Clinicals & LabsClinical rotations and labs are a necessary part of RN classes. In order to avoid the confusion and frustration experienced by many, it is best to study the lab procedures and be familiar with them ahead of time. During clinical rotations, students must remind themselves that the tasks become easier with time.
