How should you hold a test tube?

A test tube being heated should be faced away from any persons in the area, and away from any other apparatus or chemicals (preferably a safe wall or non-flammable area of the work space). The chemicals could boil, burn, or explode from the tube, so proper protective coats and glasses should always be worn.
