What would cause a switching noise in the commode after it has filled and it continues every few seconds?

You probably aren't getting a good seal around the flapper and every few seconds the tank has to fill up. This is usually caused by the chain that lifts the flapper is too long and gets caught under it when it tries to close. Simply shorten the chain.
