Costs of Research and Developm
ent are fronted by companies and sometimes individual inventors. In exchange for defining the detailed and unique nature of the novelty of an invention, the Patent and Trademark Office grants a government-backed monopoly to sell or license that invention for a limited number of years.
The patents are refrred to as Intellectual Property and the cost of the R&D plus profits are part of the equation in why a brand name product is often more expensive than generic. Especially true in prescription drugs.
Brands also are an assurance of quality that may or may not include any significant product improvements. If someone you loved was sick - would you buy the store's off- price generic brand or Robitussen. Perhaps there is more of a grey area between generic bleach and Clorox brand, as there is little or no chemical difference between the two - and its just going in the toilet anyway...
to save you the trouble , its simple when you buy name band you pay for the name , the advertising of the name ,and the product. when you buy the "other" band the company is linked to the store your buying it from or they know its not as good as the nameband so they dont sell it for the same price.
