Why is it important to have a knowledge of science?

Knowledge is essential for forming informed decisions. Suppose someone wants to build a nuclear power plant in your city. Your neighbors might oppose it on the grounds a nuclear explosion would destroy your city. You would realize this argument is nonsense, that the reactor design and fissile material could not possibly result in a nuclear explosion. Your knowledge of radiation would also help you better assess the risks and dangers. And you would recognize the futility of consulting ouja boards or mediums.

A basic understanding of science makes you a better citizen. People who base their decisions on "gut instincts" are not wise. Where sound science does not guide public policy, idiocy reigns. Unfortunately, we have far too much of that in our present government.
