What was memerial day called originally?

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. This name was used to commemorate the Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War by decorating their graves with flowers. The holiday later evolved to honor all fallen military personnel and was officially renamed Memorial Day in 1971.
